A DIARY WITH SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE

30/11/2012

When Geraldine Little starting buying the Australian Women’s Health Diary, she never thought that one day she would benefit from the breast cancer research it supports.

“I first bought the diary in 2007 because my aunt had breast cancer and I wanted to make a contribution to research,” said Geraldine. “I also enjoyed reading all the health information and tips in the diary.”

Soon after, Geraldine also started making regular donations to the Breast Cancer Institute of Australia (BCIA) for breast cancer clinical trials research.

Then, in 2009 at the age of 44, Geraldine was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“It was a shock. I never imagined this would happen to me,” said Geraldine.

Her treatment included surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment and she is now taking the hormonal treatment tamoxifen for five years. Today “life is good” says Geraldine, who lives on Queensland’s Cooloola Coast with her husband and 13 year old daughter.

“Supporting research is even more important to me now as I am living proof of the progress possible through research. I also don’t want my daughter to ever go through this, or to worry and wonder whether she is at risk of getting breast cancer because I had it.”

Geraldine wants to get the message out about this special diary.

“There is something for everyone in the diary, no matter what age or stage of life you are at – and it’s great to be reminded about important health issues, and it gets me back on track if I’m getting a bit slack!” says Geraldine.

She also thinks the diary is a wonderful gift for family and friends.

“Every year I purchase about 10 copies. I then post them to all my girlfriends and my mother, with a little note wishing them good health for the coming year and to remind them of the importance of breast self-examination and mammograms,” said Geraldine.
