PEDAL POWER SUPPORTS LOCAL FUN RUN

04/10/2011

This year’s Avon race for research – Newcastle’s local fun run to support breast cancer research – will be a celebration of 15 years of the event, and recognition of the many generous sponsors who have helped to make the event possible.

One of those sponsors is Spock’s Spokes Bicycles in Salamander Bay.

Peter Laughlan, owner of Spock’s Spokes, donated a mountain bike to be used as a prize for the very first race in 1996. Now, 15 years – and 15 mountain bikes – later, Peter is proud of his association with this event in helping to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Institute of Australia.

“It’s a great feeling knowing that I’ve been supporting this special event since the very beginning, and I still get a buzz out of presenting the bike to the Senior Male or Senior Female winner on the day.”

Peter has also participated in the event many times with members of his family and encourages everyone to join in on Sunday 23 October.

“This is a fun day out for the whole family. You can feel good about yourself for finishing the 5km course, and you can feel good about helping to raise much-needed funds for breast cancer research,” said Peter.

Avon race for research is open to women, men and children of all age groups, in a variety of categories, including family and corporate teams. Everyone who completes the course will receive a free sunscreen and lip balm, generously provided by Avon.

People can enter the event online at www.bcia.org.au. Entry forms are also available at Newcastle Permanent branches or by contacting the Breast Cancer Institute of Australia on 4925 3022. Entries close Monday 17 October.

Avon race for research is proudly sponsored by Avon, Newcastle Permanent, The Herald, Southern Cross Ten and NXFM.
