She loves her boys fiercely. In the sickening moment she learned she had breast cancer, her thoughts went to them.

“I cried all weekend after the diagnosis. I was afraid of dying. I didn’t want to leave my children.”

Facing that mountain of fear and her own mortality, Malea underwent several rounds of chemotherapy treatment and had her breasts, ovaries and fallopian tubes removed.

She found out she carries the BRCA2 genetic mutation, which meant she was always at higher risk of getting breast cancer. It also meant she may have passed the mutation onto her kids.

“With the BRCA2 gene mutation, the idea that our boys could be affected seemed so unfair.”
